Fire Ants Build a Boat Out of Themselves

One of my pet interests are “superorganisms,” insects such as ants and bees. Their organizations and talents are simply remarkable. Case in point, watch as a colony of fire ants survive a flood by building a boat out of themselves:

  1. Thanks, I had no idea they made boats of themselves. I wonder how long ago they developed that incite, or instinct.

I especially like the parts without all the heavy-handed soundtrack. I’ve watched a lot of nature documentaries lately (especially The Great Salmon Run) and am growing a little curious about the euphoria the music in combination with the images of natural systems creates. Not that I couldn’t use a little euphoria, but I wonder what’s on the other side of the emptiness the music hides, and what dis-ease the music consumerism facilitated so efficiently with ipods, etc, medicates.
